Ministry to Deer Hunters

The Christian Deer Hunters Association is a non-profit, interdenominational
organization which was incorporated in the state of Minnesota.

The C.D.H.A. distributes free-of-charge a twenty-four page devotional booklet titled Devotions for Deer Hunters Volume 12 (the most recent booklet) which contains true stories of how God has worked in the lives of various hunters.  Currently we have distributed more than 250,000 devotional booklets. Members agree to a basic statement of faith and sign a membership application .  There are presently around 600 members scattered across 39 states and several countries.

The basic goals of the Christian Deer Hunters Association are:

  • Evangelization:  Reaching others with the gospel of Christ.
  • Edification:  Building up the body of Christ.
  • Education:  Implanting the mind of Christ.
  • Entertainment: Providing enjoyable Bible-based materials in the name of Christ.

Bible and Deer Hunting

A primary objective of the Christian Deer Hunters Association is to reveal and encourage a Biblical World View approach to deer hunting.  Some of the things that a Biblical World View will help to stimulate or encourage include:
  • An awareness that deer hunting can be an excellent opportunity for sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with other hunters (Mk. 16:15-16).
  • The proper view towards those who are in authority, such as DNR officials (Rms. 13:1-7).
  • Proper treatment of game after it has been harvested (Prov. 12:27).
  • The importance of faithful church attendance and involvement during the hunting season (Heb. 10:25).
  • A wiser use of time spent while actually in the field hunting (e.g. Scripture reading, memorization, prayer, witnessing).
The work of the association is financed solely through the gifts and contributions received from members and friends of the association.

"The North American Hunter: An Endangered Specie? (Part II)"

"The Bug"

The North American Hunter: An Endangered Species?

Scripture Reading: Revelation 20:11-15

Why are many people currently opposed to hunting?  The answers to such a question would probably be too numerous to tabulate.  But a primary reason for the anti-hunter attitude that exists today can be traced to the increasing influence of Eastern thought on our society.
Such religions as Buddhism and Hinduism have made the concept of coming back to life in different forms very popular.  This idea which is known as "reincarnation" is presently being propagated through the New Age Movement.  Let's face it.  Even taking the life of a rat is difficult if there remains the remote possibility it was a relative of which you were previously fond.
But the Judeo-Christian principles upon which this country was primarily founded do not teach reincarnation.  In fact, they teach just the opposite.  God's word makes it clear we have one life.  In the New Testament book of Hebrews, the Bible tells us, ". . .man is destined to die once, and after that to face the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27, NIV).

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you that we can ". . .know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent (John 17:3, NIV).  Help me to live this one life for your glory.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.

The Bug

Scripture Reading: Romans 3:9-24

Every year I look forward to the first weekend in November.  When that first Friday evening of November arrives, it means my family and I pack up the minivan and drive up to Mora, Minnesota for the beginning of the annual rifle hunting season.  Now, I'm not a great hunter.  In fact, as far as hunting skills go, I'm below average.  But I look forward to being out in the woods, enjoying God's creation during deer season and I learn something new each year.
The first weekend of November was approaching and all week long I had been anticipating the trip north.  When I awoke Friday morning, however, I noticed just a twinge of a sore throat.  I attributed this feeling to the dry air circulating within our house and continued the day with the normal routine.  However, as the day progressed, I could feel myself succumbing to a "bug." In fact, by that evening, as we were enroute to my parents' home, I knew deep down inside, despite how hard I was fighting it, that opening day was in jeopardy.
Not only was opening day lost to a "bug," but so was the entire weekend.  Yes, I did foolishly try to go out for a few minutes before sunset on that first day, but the fever, body aches, chills, and sore throat quickly turned me around and back to the house under the multiple layers of warm blankets that awaited me in the bedroom.
My family and I returned home from opening weekend.  I went to the doctor and received antibiotics to kill the "bug" and spent the first couple days of the following week recuperating.  I spent that week asking God why I had to be sick THAT weekend.  Why not the next weekend or the weekend before or last month?
As I reflect back to that weekend and the following week, I realize how foolish I was feeling sorry for myself.  I am extremely fortunate knowing Jesus Christ as my Savior and give thanks to God for His many blessings in my life.  I only had a "bug" which invaded my body for a couple of days and then was gone, but we have all been bitten by the "bug" of sin which brings death." The Good News is that God has provided the perfect antibiotic, namely Jesus Christ.

PRAYER: Dear God, help me to be a witness to those around me invaded with the "bug" of sin.  May others ask Jesus Christ into their heart as their personal Savior.
